International Year of Natural Fibres

The United Nations has proclaimed 2009 the International Year of Natural Fibres!  Now that is something we alpaca ranchers can get behind.  Because  – if it’s not about the fiber (fibre) – then what’s it all about!  Don’t even get me started on the relevance of the United Nations, though - I think it’s a joke.  But, I do like the idea of dedicating a year to showcase/honor/promote natural fibers.

The hope is that this declaration will raise awareness of natural fibres, to promote efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibres, and to foster an effective international partnership among the various natural fibres industries.

Below is a list I found of natural animal and vegetable fibers.

As I was doing some research for this post I ran across this website.  I am seriously considering making an entry for this contest.  A ‘worldwide’ competition called Keep The Fleece.  Great Name!

And for another interesting event that is happening in San Antonio the end of March check out the Contemporary Handweavers of Texas 2009 Conference.

Now, there's a natural 'fiber' for ya!
