Time for Weaning

Just the other day we proceeded with the process of weaning our fall crias.  I had been watching them for about a month and noticed that their dams were not allowing them to nurse at times.  One dam just moved away when the cria began to nurse and the other dam actually took the ear of her cria and pulled at it!  Getting the hint from these girls, the decision was made that now was the time to separate them.

So here they are – the new weanlings  -  or are they weaners?

I will watch them closely over this next week to make sure they are eating properly and aren’t pining away for their mothers.  As long as they graze, eat hay, eat some grain and chew their cud I will assume that all is well and they will be on their way to being BIG kids!!!  Congratulations Sutton, Madison and Calhoun on the next step in your life.

  1. My vote is for “weaners.”

  2. LOL . . . Love that are they weanlings or weaners?

I found you from Rosemary’s site (Alpaca Lady), and I have been reading through a few of your posts. Glad to find another alpaca farm on the blogs.

I blog, too, but I usually blog about my card creations. My parents are the ones with the farm you will see linked to my name. My cards are found here — http://wishiniwasstampin.blogspot.com

Meanwhile, I am enjoying your posts. Thanks! :) Kelly

  3. Weaners it is then….

  4. Our latest cria does not get a lot of attention from her Mother, so the cria started experimenting with hay and alpaca mix from a very early age. Then next I note she is suckling from her Auntie, who had a cria 12 months earlier but that was weaned and Auntie had been dry for about 6 months. But little cria brought on her Aunties milk, and Auntie was looking extremely thin. So we had to seperate them

  5. So is mom still nursing her? I have had some cria who will eat hay and grain younger than a month old but I also have had one weanling that I had to put chews in her mouth so that she would eat it. Now she loves the chews. Thanks for checking out my blog.
