Boys will be boys!

We decided to check out the boys today, so I fed them in the stalls behind the barn.  They are always happy to run out of their pasture and head for a stall.  For the guys who are breeding, that can sometimes mean a girl is waiting behind the door for him.  Woo woo.

We noticed yesterday afternoon that Titus had a dark spot on the bridge of his nose and knew that it should be checked out.  He has had some fungal problems before and we thought we might need to do some treatment, if that was the problem.  As I got him caught up and took a look at his nose, I found that his ear had blood on it.  I inspected it closer and it looked as though he had been in a tussle with another one of the boys and his ear got in the way.  Poor guy.  He had some caked dried blood there so I got the hydrogen peroxide and began cleaning it.  That’s when I noticed the slash.  It is about 6 inches long and is a pretty deep cut, especially for an ear that’s not real thick.  We cleaned it well with betadine scrub and applied some triple antibiotic and will check it for about a week to be sure that it is healing without any infection.   It should heal without any problem.

Sometimes those boys really go after it in their pasture - up on their back legs, chest butting each other and biting and screaming!  If you are on the outside and don’t know what’s behind our fences, you might think someone was being tortured!  Well, it looked like Titus was ‘tortured’ by his pasture mates and may have lost this tussle.  Boys will be boys!  Thankfully it was only an ear.
