Halter Training

For the past three weeks I have been training our three juvenile alpacas to lead on a halter because we are attending the A-OK Alpaca Blast Off show in Shawnee, OK the last weekend in January.  The two boys are pretty easy going about it, but the girl is a bit worried about what I am doing with her head all strapped up.  Slowly she is getting the hang of it.

At first I just introduced them to the halter by slowly putting it on them.  I didn’t really try to lead them around the first time because they just needed to get used to the feel of something around their head.  I don’t imagine that it’s a very good feeling at first having been free to do whatever they wanted until this day.

A couple of times a week I have worked with these kids, each time working a little longer and eventually leading on the halter.   They are all improving as the days go by, but it has been about five days since I last worked with them because we have had yucky weather.  Today is a beautiful day, so this afternoon it will be about a 10 minute training session with each juvie.
